3 Reasons Why Language Skills Are More Important Than Ever

March 15 , 2019

English is the most commonly spoken second language in the world. American students are automatically at an advantage by being native English speakers, and therefore,  may think that they have less of a ‘need’ to learn a second language. When traveling abroad or conducting business internationally, English is used globally and makes it easier for native English speakers to get by without learning a second language.

Although many American students may feel that they don’t necessarily need to learn another language, we believe that learning languages is of the utmost importance and will continue to be a valuable skill in the future.

These are our top three, of a long list, of benefits of learning a second language.

1. Brain Benefits

Studies have shown that learning a second language increases your cognitive abilities. Some of the brain benefits of a second language include higher intelligence, increased environmental awareness and boosts in brain power.

Some studies also believe that being bilingual from an early age can help protect you from memory loss caused by dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Keep your brain in peak shape and study another language!

2. Create Global Opportunities

As we’re well aware, the world is becoming increasingly global and there will be a subsequent demand for professionals who are compatible with this global market and mindset. In learning a second language students afford themselves the opportunity to work in international environments.

Having a second language on your resume helps you stand out amongst other applicants and provide an additional reason for potential employers to want you and your skillset in their arsenal.

3. Expand Your Awareness of Thinking

In addition to the many doors that are opened through additional language skills, learning another language also assists students in becoming bicultural and more understanding of the values and cultural differences between countries.

Through language, we are able to better understand individuals from other countries. In doing so, students become more well-rounded human beings with an awareness that has been expanded outside the confines of their home country.
