For architecture students, or those who simply have an interest and appreciation for architecture, Europe is full of cities with stunning and unique examples of styles spanning hundreds of years. There is no better way to fully experience and take in these fantastic works, than strolling the streets of these European cities.
That’s why we have consolidated our top seven best European cities for architecture students (or those who just prefer to enjoy!). In no particular order, check out these seven culturally and historically rich cities that offer some of the best architecture in the world.
1) Paris, France
Paris has a distinct and romantic feel and is home to buildings of a variety of architectural styles ranging from French Renaissance to Art Nouveau to Art Deco and everything in between. Paris is truly an architecture lover’s dream.
2) Rome, Italy
Rome is a city that is top of mind when thinking historic architecture, as it is home to some of the most well-preserved monuments and structures from the Ancient Roman Empire. The city as it stands today has structures of Renaissance, Baroque, and Fascist architectural styles.
3) Oxford, England
Oxford is a relatively compact city with its origins dating back to the late Saxon period. The city also houses buildings in the styles of English Gothic, Neoclassical, Baroque and more, making this historic city a colorful mix of various styles.
4) Toledo, Spain
Toledo is a less frequented Spanish city than the popular Barcelona and Madrid, but has a storied history dating back to Roman times. It is also well known for its religious diversity of Christians, Jews and Muslims. There are architectural examples from the Spanish Golden Age and Gothic style, with influences from the variety of aforementioned religious communities.
5) Strasbourg, France
We implore you to find a more quaint and lovely town than Strasbourg, we think you’d be hard pressed to find one. With its close proximity to the German border, this town has certainly been influenced by its German neighbor in terms of style. Strasbourg also has many buildings with architecture of Gothic and Roman styles.
6) Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh has a wide variety of architecture to take in, ranging from medieval times to neoclassical styles. Today there are a number of modern buildings that add to the mix of old and new.
7) Vienna, Austria
Vienna has an interesting mixture of architecture spanning many periods and styles. The city contains Baroque-era monuments to world famous Wiener Moderne or Vienna Modern architecture, which had a heavy influence on the rest of the world.
